For the first time in recent memory, there was no weekend crowd at Park Street. Instead there were vultures swarming over the party zone. They could be seen everywhere — perched on the giant billboards, hovering over Stephen Court and sitting on Queen's Mansion cornices.
''The way vultures are hovering over the building indicates there are more bodies under the debris. It's eerie in there. God knows how many more bodies we'll h***e to pull out,'' said a fireman engaged in clearing the rubble.
Throughout the day, both the entry points to Stephen Court — on Park Street and on Middleton Row — witnessed heated exchanges between the police and residents of Stephen Court.
His apprehensions are not misplaced because even four days after the fire, the list of missing persons keeps growing. On Saturday, one more person was added to the list. Vinit Kumar Karan from Jharkhand was put on the list after hi***ather contacted police. Hi***riends in Kolkata also lodged a complaint with Shakespeare Sarani police station saying Vinit, who used to work at Stephen Court, is missing since Tuesday.
''On any other Saturday you would've found people gearing up to party. But today it's still sombre. Park Street has not witnessed such a disaster in recent memory,'' said Eugene Philip, a bouncer at one of the old bars.
The lights were out in many shopfronts, dimmed in others. The milling crowd, the music, the clink of glasses were missing. The heady aroma of good food had been replaced by the all-pervading stench of death.
